Plan for a safe garage sale
Are you planning to find new homes for your old stuff by having a garage or yard sale this spring? Be sure to consider safety issues, so theft or an accident won’t wipe out whatever you make on your sales:
- Arrange sale items so that there is adequate space for buyers to move around - piling stuff haphazardly increases the chance of someone tripping or falling (and potentially filing a lawsuit). Don’t forget to inspect your yard, driveway and sidewalk for hidden traps, such as a garden hose left uncoiled on the lawn.
- Post a trusted person at the door of your home to prevent strangers from slipping into the house. Be careful if buyers ask to use the phone or bathroom - they could be “casing the joint.” Either have someone accompany them inside or ask them to go elsewhere.
- Designate someone to help direct parking. Improper parking can lead to traffic problems or accidents.
- Before selling your discards, let’s check your Homeowners liability coverage. While we’re reviewing your Homeowners policy, we should see if any other sections need updating, too.
