Disaster planning for your finances
What’s your bank account number? Your insurance policy number? Can you list all the items of value in your home? Imagine trying to answer such questions after your financial records have been destroyed by fire or natural disaster. Thanks to technology, it’s now easier than ever to organize and store a large volume of information on compact discs (CDs) or floppy discs. If you prefer the low-tech route of pen and paper and photocopies, that’s fine, too. Whatever your preference, I strongly encourage you to make at-home and off-site copies of your financial information ahead of time:
- List important financial data in one place. Bank / investments / retirement / insurance account numbers and contact information (names and phone numbers) should be kept in one convenient document. If you contact me, I can provide your insurance policy information quickly.
- Conduct a home inventory. Call me and I’ll provide you with a household inventory checklist (or go to Farmers website and download it from there). Either videotape or photograph your home’s contents. If you use a digital camera; you can store the photos on a disc, flash card or memory stick, or upload them to a Web site.
- Update your insurance policy. Let’s review your coverage now!
