Understanding Bodily Injury Liability

Bodily Injury Liability is one of the six basic coverages of the Auto Insurance. This is also one of the most important coverages as it applies to following situations:

  • Injuries that you, the designated driver or the policy holder causes to others
  • Injuries that you and the family member may suffer due to the accident

This coverage applies even when you are driving a rental car. Generally, there is a prescribed state-required minimum coverage, but do consider buying a coverage well above the state-required minimum coverage to protect your assets from the lawsuits occuring from such accidents. Such lawsuits are capable of taking away your home and savings. There are other strategies like an Umbrella policy, that we will discuss later, that can increase the coverage substantially, thus protecting your home and other assets.

Most auto insurance liability policies are named with three numbers. These numbers are called the split limits. For example, if the split limits are 500/500/100 on your policy, then you would be covered for up to $500,000 in damages for bodily injury you cause another person, $500,000 in damages for any bodily injuries endured, and $100,000 for coverage of damage to property.

Bodily injury liability coverage protects you from escalating legal costs and claims filed against you in the event that you injure or God forbid kill someone in an automobile accident.
